I got an email today from a member of my online stop drinking course. Let's call him John.
John said 'I want to give up alcohol but at the same time I am worried because I think it's become a habit. It's something that's always been in my life, and for that reason I don't think I will ever be able to stop.
So, how do you know when your drinking moves from just being a bad habit to being an addiction.
The answer may surprise you.
The word habit is a bit of a red herring. Bad habits don't really exist in the way that we assume they do. Everything we do is serving a purpose, even if the purpose is spurious. We are not robots; we are always trying to either move away from pain or move toward pleasure.
We drink alcohol because we believe it gives us something. That could be relaxation, confidence, or sleep - all very common explanations. Of course, as you will discover in the course, alcohol does not provide any of those outcomes.
We don't drink out of habit!
Let me demonstrate how I know this to be true. If you had an apple with your lunch every day for 20 years. You could say it was a habit. However, if it were revealed with 100% certainty that apples cause cancer you would not insist on continuing to have an apple a day, because it is a habit.
You would replace the apple with something else, and while it might feel a bit weird for a while - it wouldn't be difficult.
Alcohol is a highly addictive drug that tells us that it is a harmless social pleasantry. Alcohol lies!
